Organizing your trek
|
Go through an agency : Everything is organized, from luxury trek to a day trip. Count from 40 to a 1000 dollars a day. Usually wapasi or tips are not included (See Baltoro). They generally target the most famous treks for routes a little more off the beaten track inquire. Find one of the many agencies on the net.
| | Important: Remember to book your trek at least 6 months in advance for the setting of the groups; prices can vary depending on the number of participants. For the lucky ones who want to save money, you may be able to piggyback on a group already formed several months in advance, see directly in Pakistan. The agencies ask for a deposit, for Pakistan transfer money from bank to bank (see Baltoro) ... | Organizing your trek Hire for a few days guide, porters, cook if necessary, etc ... Count following the treks 20 USD per day for the guide, between 1100 and 1500 rps. The porters are paid per stages, sometimes two in one day, depending on the itinerary. In 2007 the official rate was based on a stage paid 300 rps without food (get food for your porter in this case) and 350 rps if he organizes his meals. This rate increases every year. The weight that you give them is limited to 25 kg, it avoids the shameful drift of Nepal, where porters are paid by weight and even carry loads of more than 100 kg through the mountains! The 25 kg do not include food and affairs of the porter. The day you are blocked by bad weather, the porters will be paid one stage; it may be possible to negotiate them with rest days to a certain extent. | | | Think about wapasi, money which is necessary for the porter to return home. Do not forget the tips, to negotiate with all team members before leaving. Sometimes you will be asked a tip on top of wapasi; often it is the same thing. In principle, count for tips 10 to 20% of total wages; equipment left from your treks or expeditions are also welcome. For porters a day of rest every 7 days, and not every 7 stages, this day shall be paid half or a normal stage depending on the treks. Keep in mind that there are many possibilities. Which is valid in a valley is not in the other ... etc. Do not take someone on the way. Negotiate what includes the salary you pay, the best is to write on a piece of paper in front of witnesses (people from the village, the guesthouse ...). You want to organize your trek without guide or porter, do not go alone! It is better to meet other travellers in the same situation as you, and get together. Do not leave less than three, warn locas, let them know about your itinerary etc ... | | Think that for a small amount of money you will help Pakistanis live, who have summer and a few tourists only to make a living. You will often be entitled to a royal welcome in families, and many doors will open in inhabited treks areas. | | |
In case of accident as the crossing of the Passu glacier where some bodies have still not been found, inhabitants are can be held responsible if they left you go alone. |

All GPS are forbidden on the Pakistani territory. The reason is simple, take for example the Baltoro, there are many military posts on the roads even more check points, and it is easy to point them. According to the relations with its Indian neighbour, they are banned. For those who have some with them, be discreet. 9 times out of 10 you will only find Pakistanis curious of such technology; but if you meet the wrong person then troubles start.
In general the water is ice cold, if you have a stove do not hesitate to use it! Some sites on the major treks offer shower cabins. On the other, choose a hidden spot, or take water and wash in your tent. | |
|
Photography | | You can find films in all major cities of northern Pakistan. For the processing of pictures on site you may be disappointed. In Gilgit labs have joined digital era, some are of good quality. In trek, when the temperature approaches zero, remember to sleep with your batteries, otherwise because of the lack of heat it may be discharged and deprive you of holiday memories.

Open Zone Trek: No trekking permits. Restricted Zone Trek : Request a trekking permit to the Ministry of Tourism (50USD per person) - There is a briefing and debriefing.
You go to a Muslim country, it is important to respect clothing rules covering legs and top with large clothes. An outfit revealing more than the head, hands or feet may be considered offensive. Do not walk or undress or in lycra! The veil is not obligatory for women. In some bazaars as in Peshawar it is better to wear a Hijab. (See travelling as a woman). In cities In summer, choose outfits in cotton rather than synthetic. Shalwar kamiz, the traditional costume made of two parts is ideal. In trek You have a guide but not porters, choose a good backpack (Millet, Love Alpine, Karrimor, Decathlon ...), between 55 and 80 litres. You are part of a group, choose a big zipped waterproof bag and leave it to your porter. Take a bag of 20 to 30 litres, which you will use to carry water, cameras, clothes... Top : Choose one or more polypropylenes like Helly Hensen, they keep warm even wet. Another advantage is that they easily allow for the lightest of them bearing the heat amplitudes current in the mountains. On days when it is hot, prefer a light cotton outfit. Add a fleece, a waterproof jacket, ideally Gore Tex. Hat and gloves will be welcome when you get close to the height of the base camps.
| | Bottom : Pants: Choose a cotton lightweight trek pant, and if you climb to high altitudes, a little more technical pant to compete with cold and snow. Choose trekking synthetic cotton socks, and wool for the cold. | | |
For Biafo Hispar, Gondoro La or other altitude treks outside summer time, gaiters can be useful. Shoes : it is a key point. Get high shoes to avoid twisting your ankle. Make your shoes before you get there, this will prevent you from having blisters difficult to deal with during a few days. Gore Tex got democratized, so don’t hesitate. Think of bringing shock absorbing soles, they will minimize pain on the back and knees. Don’t forget to bring a little grease to get your leather shoes in good shape. Important : it is difficult to find technical gear in Northern Pakistan. Of course, bring head covers and sun glasses. Prefer category 4 (winter sports), snow and altitude make light especially bright. For Gondogoro La or Biafo Hispar, sun block! Don’t be afraid to spread it all over your face, it will prevent you from chapped lips and sun burnt face.
