Camps above 5000 m. Beyond 25 km/day, Technical river crossing, technical glacier crossing, dangerous parts, scree slopes hazardous. Crossing snow pass, rope skills, last level before alpinism.
One of the difficult mountain passes of Pakistan, Mazeno is at the junction between Rupal and the Indus Valley. You can discover the southern flanks of the impressive Nanga Parbat. Sheet informed by Jeff Strahan (Australia)
It is very difficult, steep slopes in the snow, with risk of falling rocks; too early in the season there are avalanches.
The real difficulty lies in the contact with local populations. Of course you will find very nice people, especially in Tarishing guesthouses, but the general atmosphere remains relatively unpleasant. There are no frank smiles; you will rather encounter mistrust, ignorance, and sometimes an unhealthy curiosity. In the past, there have been problems with trekkers, according to local people there has been a rape and a murder. Do not be surprised if you get hit by stones coming from aggressive kids. You're not particularly welcome here, ditto for Astore.
Get ready for a few porters strikes scams or rip offs, they are not systematic but happen quite often.
To get there is a little complicated, you just hear everything and anything. A special costs around 3000, one way, or 6000 rps return. Buses or passenger jeeps can leave from Gilgit bus station or somewhere else. We paid 300 rps with a jeep returning to Tarishing, inquire. The solution is to go to the main bus station of Gilgit to go to Astore and then take a jeep or organize a special to Tarishing. There two check post inevitable, a first one in Astore and another one at the police station in the village. If you are going through, numerous vehicles using the KKH return to Gilgit.
Guide and porters
A guide is compulsory… For the guide, it cost between 1000 and 1200 rps / day, for 3 days we have paid 4000 rps including tips. Of course get someone you can trust for this sector, going through Gilgit is the best! For the porter, count 12 stages return up to, and 12 stages one way to Bunar, costing 300 rps or 350 rps including food.
To cross the Mazeno it gets a bit more complicated. The inhabitants of the two valleys are in conflict. You will need to organize the routing of a team of the other valley for the day you cross the pass. Porters exchange loads at the Mazeno pass. Of course, tips are multiplied by 2, because there are two teams!
We heard about porters’ strikes, whether you give them an extra 200 USD or they leave you there. Organize everything from Gilgit with your guide or agency, be clear, write it all, etc… A messenger is usually sent to Bunar side to organize the porters’ team.
In Tarishing, 2 guesthouses are all right, count 200 to 300 rps for a double, and between 100 and 150 rps per meal.
